Easing the First-Day Jitters: Supporting Your Child in a New Childcare Setting

Starting a new daycare is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring a mix of nerves, tears, and adjustments for both children and parents alike! The good news is that with some thoughtful and research-backed strategies, you can ease the transition for your little one and set them up for success in their new journey.

Why Transitions Matter in Early Childhood Education

Transitions can be stressful because children thrive on predictability and routines. When their environment changes, it can temporarily unsettle them. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) highlights that consistent, predictable routines and responsive adult relationships are essential in helping children feel secure during new experiences (NAEYC, 2016). The takeaway being that your child really needs YOU. So, let’s look at some great strategies for helping your little one through this big transition.

Here at Summit Prep Academy, we know choosing the right childcare for your little one is a huge decision. We would be happy to share more about our school and how we build up and teach our little learners–from our youngest babies to our oldest preschoolers! Simple Strategies for a Smooth Switch

1. Visit Before the First Day

Schedule a short visit at the new daycare of childcare with your child before their big first day. This visit provides them with the opportunity to explore the classroom, check out the toys, test out the playground and meet their teachers. The NAEYC recommends familiarizing children with a new environment and caregivers in order to help reduce anxiety–altogether working towards a smoother transition.

2. Create a Consistent Goodbye Routine

Remember, children thrive with routines–especially in early childhood education. The organization Zero to Three affirms that predictable routines give children a sense of safety and help them manage expectations; This can make a huge difference when beginning a new childcare or daycare! Whether it’s a hug and three kisses or a super special handshake or the same phrase said at every goodbye, beginning a routine for your family is a sweet way to support your child every day, not just during this transition.

Our early childhood educators here at Summit Prep Academy are wonderful and would love to help your little one feel welcome and comfortable upon arrival. We would love to support your family to make the day and drop off full of cheers and less tears.

3. Talk About Daycare in Positive Terms

Talking through what they can expect helps frame expectations and reduce uncertainty–and remember, excitement is contagious! Talk about the friends they will play with, the outdoor play they can expect, story time, art projects, new toys and so much more! Positive discussions will help shape their new daycare or childcare as an exciting place. In the PBS kids show Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Daniel sings about starting his new school, too: “When we do something new, let’s talk about what we’ll do.” An excellent lesson (and an excellent episode) to help set the stage for a new transition.

Small children look to the adults in their life to help set the tone for how they feel about new or potentially anxiety-inducing scenarios. Here at Summit Preparatory Academy, we are ready to greet all of our students with enthusiasm to help build excitement for the day. Schedule a tour to meet our teachers and talk about how we can help your child as they transition to a new school.

4. Bringing a Piece of Home

Research shows comfort items help children manage separation anxiety (Source). Bringing along a family picture, favorite stuffed animal or even wearing matching bracelets with their adult can help children feel like they have a piece of home with them in a new place.

5. Communicate with Teachers

Parent–teacher collaboration fosters smoother adjustment (Child Trends). Teachers are partners with your family, so share with them your child’s likes and calming strategies so they can help! We are happy to support your family in this way here at Summit Preparatory Academy. Call us today to schedule a tour and ask about our classroom openings!

6. Be Patient with Emotions

It’s normal for children to cry, cling, or simply not want to go in the beginning of a new transition. Sticking to the other strategies in having a solid “good-bye” routine, reminding your little one of the exciting things they are going to do that day, as well as when they can expect you back all help when their anxiety mounts. The NAEYC reminds families that children need time to develop trust with new caregivers and that patience, reassurance, and consistency are key.

Transitions can take a little time, and our early childhood educators are ready to come along side your family and help make it smooth and easy. Come for a tour and meet our teachers, see our classrooms, and check out our awesome outdoor play areas!

The Big Picture: Building Resilience

While starting a new daycare or childcare can at first feel overwhelming, it’s also an impactful opportunity for growth. With supportive parents, caring educators, and consistent routines, children not only adapt, but they also thrive. Over time, these little ones will build resilience, social skills, and confidence; in turn laying a strong foundation for their future in early childhood education and beyond.
